Jonnie Baby - Special Things 1986 - Elektra

This fantastic single was released in the summer of 1986 and was lifted from an album that never ever appeared. Many have wondered on the whereabouts of this great artist. Well, Jonnie Baby left Elektra and joined EMI USA where he changed his name to...Mikki Bleu. I'd like to think that what was designed as his 1986 Elektra album ended up in the laps of EMI, and that album became “I Promise”. This song is one of the man's best pieces of work without doubt and easily overshadows anything he records today – and that stuff is darn good too!

This was released on both 7” and 12” - the 12” being more collectible – but truth is that the song is exactly the same length, and both flipsides contain the instrumental version, so if you seek this one out then it's up to you what format you go for. It's all down to preference really. The song itself simply shuffles along with a firm beat and plenty of bells and quirky 80s keys. Jonnie has a voice that is instantly recognisable and this style is best suited to him. Attempts to play to the homeboy or playa R&B brigade today simply falls flat and it's in a more adult, soulful mode where the man excels. The lesson to be learned is be true to yourself – and listen to what comes of it! Another classic, quality 80s groove.
