Keni's second solo set, his first for RCA, and one that remains a closely loved and revered album amongst soul fans world over. Keni Burke is a stupendous talent and one who should be more involved in the studio; his last solo effort being a decade ago via Expansion Records. This album, as well as the mighty "Changes" album have been afforded reissue on CD in Japan so the tatty old vinyl can finally be laid to rest! Three of my most cherished songs from his whole career can be found tucked away on here, and any one of these are worth a Japanese import price tag. "Never Stop Lovin' Me" is a serious dream of a track and this Curtis Mayfield penned track is one of a number of songs I would love to take over to "the other side" with me once I shuffle off this mortal coil! The warm Fender Rhodes keyboards, strings and percussion take it to astronomical heights. Wonderful, essential and timeless.
My second of three choices is the sublime "Love Is The Answer". Never have I heard anyone BETTER a Todd Rundgren song but along comes Keni and does just that. Keni makes it his own through his unique vocal pitching and phrasing, yet he manages to keep Rundgren's own unique and wonderfully haunting melodic style, and managing to funk it up a shade as well. What a wonder if these two talents could work together! Third up is "Gotta Find My Way Back In Your Heart", a track that is simply perfect. The melody is classic and the strings and flute hark back a few years to the late 70s. A simpler, more soulful and warm musical time. The dancer "Let Somebody Love You" is as fantastic a mover today as it was back then and paired with tracks such as the O'Jays "Put Our Heads Together" will really get the floor heaving. "Paintings Of Love" is classy too - and all songs together show how and why this album is still held in such esteem. An essential 80s album.
