Next Movement - More Love 1985 - Nuance

Better known for their Prelude Records release, “Let's Work It Out”, Next Movement moved on to Nuance Records in 1984 for their “All I Do” single. The follow-up single, released in 1985 ranks as one of my all-time favourites of any period. With a strong baritone, this could have been a perfect vehicle for the Stylistics and the confident, strong backing belied the fact that this was released on an independent label. The vocal harmonies are very reminiscent of the Rhani Song style of production, and although programmed – something that receives a lot of criticism – just listen to the sheer soul here.

From the very opening, the synth widens up giving me chills, and the powerful bass line and clapping refrain simply sends me to another place. I have not stopped playing this cut since day one and it always gets an airing on the rare occasion of a hot summer day. What a tune to whack up and have blaring from the car! The B-Side is an instrumental version, and very nice too but this is a song that definitely loses power without the baritone and grittier vocal interchanges that we hear on the A side. This is still a hidden gem and it beggars belief that tunes like this are not more widely known or played on quality radio.
