We all know and love this album, released on Roy Ayers' Uno Melodic label back in 1980. This had been a real rarity during the rare groove era, and was then released on CD in Japan – then the UK – and have, again, become rarities in their own right. Fear not, because if you have, like me, crossed the threshold into the digital age then you can download the album from iTunes. No crackles, no pops and no ridiculous price tags! “Ladies Of The Eighties” is a classy effort by anyone's standards and the music still stands on it's own two feet today. Roy Ayers knows a good melody and can pick a damn fine vocal for his work, too and it is no surprise that this outfit were to fit the bill so brilliantly. Not many people know that 90s recording artist Marva Hicks was part of this group! Told you Roy Ayers knew a good thing when he heard it. The album focuses on a groovier and funkier sound which Roy was more than accustomed to as he had been working this scene for a number of years by now.
I've chosen 4 tracks to showcase the album, but really, you can take your pick. This is a really strong album and nothing on here is a risk. I start my review with the spacey and ethereal “He Is Mine Forever”which is Roy Ayers through and through – what a sensual performance given by these sexy Ladies. Just what this doctor ordered! More up tempo and summery is “I Know That Love” which would not be out of place on the earlier work by Ramp. Marva Hicks really is at the fore on here and powerful she is too. Please also give a listen to the delightful “Sing Me” which has some interesting lyrics – something of a novelty these days. If any song could raise a round of applause it would be “Turned On To You”! This is one hell of a groove and still washes the floor with most tunes. The bouncy guitar and scratchy, persistent backing is nothing short of dizzying, and does this not act as a showcase for how wonderful our music can be? This is one hell of a Soulchoon. Happy downloading!
