Kleeer - Seeekret 1985 - Atlantic

This album from 1985 was the last album effort from this remarkable group. As you know, we had to wait until 1994 for the next release by way of “Oooh With You” and another 3 years for Woody Cunningham to slam us with a killer set of up tempo soulchoonz! I had this on vinyl, and was amazed to see this – and ALL other Kleeer albums – available for download on iTunes! PLEASE, do NOT accept the second-rate bootleg that is doing the rounds along with goodness-knows how many other classic 80s albums at the moment. It's amazing what is cropping up legitimately for download on iTunes, and this is how I've replaced my original vinyl! Atlantic were on a roll with up tempo soul at the time and this album epitomises all that was good about their output in the mid '80s. It's tunes like these that have been overlooked, and why I and many others are eager to reconnect with the 80s and share as many of these gems with you as possible.

“Take Your Heart Away” is classic Kleeer. The beats are programmed, yes, which was the thing at the time but it's the soulful ability behind the mix that makes it so damn good! The guys know what is funky and what isn't and this proves it. “Lay Ya Down EZ” is to this album what “Intimate Connection” was to their 1984 set of the same title. I think this is absolutely brilliant, and everything about it leaves me full of happy memories and rejoicing at how fantastic the 80s was. Twenty-three years on and I still feel the same way about “Never Cry Again”. This was the template for what became the “Never Say Never” album (review to come.) A top-dog tune if ever I heard one, and surely a groove to inspire a new generation of soulsters such as Bennson, Skalp, Confection and Cool Million. Bring. It. On! The Chic-inspired guitar and rhythm groove of “Call My Name” is my final choice, and won't disappoint either. Head straight to iTunes and download away. I daren't tell you how much I spent...
