The Horne Section - Lady Shine (Shine On) 1984 – 4th & Broadway

Henry Horne, along with THS partner Roger Garnette, is best known for this dancefloor scorcher from 1984. Released in the originally on the little Roe Buck label, and then snapped up in the US and UK for the 4th & Broadway label, the the remastered and remixed track was an immediate hit and as far as I am concerned is still very much an essential inclusion on any DJ's playlist having an 80s section. What true DJ doesn't?! Their one and only 12” release, sadly, “Lady Shine (Shine On)” stands in 2008 as a sheer masterpiece of soulful 80s dance. I wish that the man would get back in the studio to record some new material – as was once postulated – but we have still to hear the fruits of those labours.

This track, though, sells itself. You do not need the likes of myself to critique it. Strong in both melody, lyrics and vocals the single radiates excellence from every beat. The 12” was backed by a semi- instrumental version, and if I'm correct the cut was included on a Vinyl Masterpiece compilation some time back – so check them out! The song always evokes happy memories for me, and that's part of the job of great artists and great music – to touch you and leave a footprint on your imagination and your soul. What Henry Horne and Roger Garnette did here was create a small piece of soul music for posterity. Quality will always rise to the top and songs like this will always be with us.
